Equine Herpes Virus Outbreak 2020 Advice

14 January 2020 | by

On 8th January 2020 an outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1) was diagnosed at a competition yard in Hampshire. We understand the yard has ceased all activities and all horses who have recently visited the yard have been placed in isolation for 14 days.

At present, clients of Buckingham Equine Vets have no reason to cease competing, hacking out or riding. We do however, inline with BEF advice, recommend that all horse owners remain vigilant for signs of the virus, maintain excellent biosecurity and consult with us if they are concerned.

The Animal Health Trust (AHT) has today issued some advise on sensible and simple biosecurity steps for horse owners and competitors attending equine events. This can be found by clicking here: Biosecurity Steps

EHV-1 is a contagious disease that can be spread through direct and indirect contact, with the virus surviving in the environment for several weeks. Clinical signs include a high temperature, coughing, nasal discharge, lethargy and loss of appetite. Severely affected animals can display neurological symptoms, and pregnant mares can also suddenly and unexpectantly miscarry their unborn foal.
