For any equine or human athlete striving to achieve success it is far better to prevent injury than responding to it. For this reason we have introduced a ‘performance health check programme’ specifically targeted to assess and monitor abnormalities before they create a poor performance limiting issue.
The programme is suited to all performance horses involved in any equine athletic discipline including dressage, eventing, show jumping, and endurance riding.
The programme is designed to monitor all aspects of equine health which can be assedd either at a single examination or through a series of consultations. We recommend subsequent examinations every 3 months, though this can be organised in line with individual competition schedules. We believe that by maintaining a regular series of thorough horse consultations and rider discussions we can optimise horse health to the benefit of all involved.
What’s involved at the performance health check?
To book a health check please give us a call at the clinic (01908 560789).

Worming horses isn’t what it used to be. The days of administering wormers at fixed intervals throughout the year are gone, and a more responsible, targeted approach is now essential.
Due to years of routine blanket deworming, many parasites have developed resistance to the wormers we rely on. With resistance increasing and no new treatments on the horizon, adopting a smarter worming strategy has never been more important.
High worm burdens can put your horse at risk of a range of health issues, including weight loss, poor condition, diarrhoea and, in some cases, colic. In severe situations, worm-related diseases may become increasingly difficult — or even impossible — to treat.
A well-planned, strategic worming programme is a vital part of your horse’s preventative healthcare. We have developed a new worming programme to help achieve this. Please refer to the flow chart below to determine which package is best suited to your horse.
Please note: This package does not include additional faecal worm egg counts if results are high, any wormers should they be required, additional blood tests, or the visit fee for blood sampling. However, bloods can be taken on one of our reduced zone days.

To help choose when is the best time to test follow the chart below.

If you have any questions about any details of our worming packages, please call the clinic to discuss further (Tel: 01908 560789).

A bespoke, hands on programme designed to identify and manage laminitis risk
With spring on the horizon, now is a great time to start carefully assessing and managing your horse’s weight with Buckingham Equine Vets.
Maintaining your horse at a healthy weight is really important for many reasons but coming into spring it is especially important for managing laminitis risk – Did you know that being overweight can not only increase your horse’s risk of laminitis but also affect their chances of making a full recovery?
To help you manage your horse most effectively we are launching a new package including:
* Blood test for insulin, glucose, triglycerides, adiponectin. For representative blood test results, horses must be fed only forage (hay or grass) for 4 hours before blood testing. No hard feed should be given in this time.
